Safety Culture Change  THROUGH  Human Error Prevention

Implementation

Construction/Contractors

In a construction site, the supervisor sets the tone for production as well as safety. SafeStart Construction/Contractors has been designed to take advantage of this aspect of construction work to ensure workers remain safe.

In order for workers to remain safe, they need knowledge as well as the willingness to apply that knowledge. Everyone knows that simply giving someone the knowledge to be safer is not enough to be able to achieve instantaneous change. Knowing what to do’ is one thing; actually doing it when it matters is another.

To give workers the knowledge as well as get them to apply it, there are three parts to SafeStart Construction/Contractors. These are:-

Two SafeStart Construction/Contractor Units for all workers on site.

Unit #1 is on Safety, Risk and Error and Unit #2 is on Critical Error Reduction Techniques. Each unit takes 3 hours and are delivered up to one week apart. The participants receive the ‘Taking SafeStart Home' Kit’ that includes 4 DVD's that can be used to introduce the SafeStart concepts to their loved ones, and free access to the online course for anyone in their family.

Four SafeTrack Construction/Contractor Units for supervisors and a portion of the workforce to conduct observations.

SafeTrack can be delivered in four half day sessions, two one-day sessions or in two straight days. The observers trained are usually a 50/50 mix of supervisors and workers within the first year with an additional portion of the workforce trained in subsequent years.

Safestart ToolBox Series.

These are 40 videos (contained in 8 DVD's) of workplace incidents lasting five to seven minutes each. All incidents have been recreated and the participants are asked

  • what traditional safety practices could have prevented the incident,
  • what states and errors were involved and
  • what critical error reduction techniques may have prevented it.

Each video ends with an ‘off the job’ equivalent scenario because most injuries to people happen away from work.

SafeStart Construction/ Contractors has been designed to take advantage of this aspect of construction work to ensure workers remain safe.

SafeStart is a Human Error Prevention Program that has achieved a consistent
60-90% reduction in workplace incidents within 6-12 months of its implementation.

Almost 2 million people have been trained in SafeStart at more than 2000 organisations (7000 sites) in over 40 countries.
