Safety Culture Change  THROUGH  Human Error Prevention

Implementation

Critical Success

Although most organisations only consider implementing SafeStart once they notice that not all incidents can be prevented by a safety management system, safety leadership and/or a peer to peer observation process, SafeStart has worked just as well in organisations when it has been the only safety initiative.

SafeStart is not the last ‘polishing’ step in managing safety.  It is one of the major tools available for organisations to reduce incidents and injuries dramatically.

Once an organisation embarks on implementing SafeStart, there are a few critical factors that influence success.  These are:-

  • Obtaining Support from Supervisors and Above.  In workplaces where supervisors and above have not been actively involved or supported the implementation effort, the injury reduction achieved has been typically 25-30% less.  This is the reason why Leaders' Initiation Sessions are so important during the initial roll-out.

  • Sticking to the Schedule as Designed.
If there is a reason for deviating from the agreed schedule, then consult SafeTrain for advice.

  • Embedd the SafeStart Principles into the Existing Safety Management System.  Workplaces that embrace the SafeStart principles in everything they do achieve the highest injury reductions.  Contact SafeTrain for free resources to assist.

  • Get SafeTrain to Conduct an Annual ‘Health Check’. Projects do not always follow the plan that was designed.  The important thing is to notice the deviation and to act to rectify it.  Having SafeTrain involved on an annual basis can help you detect deviations and provide advice or resources to get the project back on track swiftly.
