Extended Application Units
How do you sustain the performance and keep the enthusiasm and commitment to the SafeStart principles alive?
There are five Extended Application Units (EAUs) that reinforce the original SafeStart training, and provide advanced applications for the SafeStart concepts.
Depending on your training schedule, this will provide up to two and a half years of sustainability. Designed as a 3 or 6 month follow-up to the SafeStart Core Units, each of these ‘skill builders’ takes about 2 hours. Each EAU reviews the original SafeStart concepts to keep safety skills sharp and introduces more advanced concepts and techniques to further develop employee safety skills.
The 5 Extended Application Units are:
Unit 1: Sprains & Strains
Discusses how to prevent manual handling injuries - the leading cause of Workers Compensation costs using SafeStart principles and the Critical Error Reduction Techniques (CERTs).
Unit 2: Two Recurring Problems
Focuses on the two most critical SafeStart skills:not self triggering quickly enough to prevent critical errors, and improving safety critical habits.
Unit 3: Mind on Task, Safety Systems, Recognising Change
Helps reduce errors that are made when the only thing that stands between you and an error is your memory. It also helps you deal with changes to a system or habit which tend to set your up for a mind not on task error.
Unit 4: Deliberate Risk and Error
Seeks to make people stop and think: when they are changing what they normally do because they’re in a rush, frustrated or tired (fatigued); or when complacency contributes to doing something that increases the risk of error (eg texting while driving).
Unit 5: Risk, Error & Redundancy
Explores the last two types of deliberate risk that SafeStart can help with: when complacency causes you to disregard (or not use) something that could limit the effects of a critical error, like not wearing a seat belt or not using a checklist; and when you don’t “self-trigger” when you know you should because you’re rushing, frustrated or tired (fatigued).
This training teaches and motivates employees to conduct their own investigations on close calls and small errors they make, so they can learn from these and avoid the big ones.
